HUGE HYDATID CYST LEFT OCCIPITO-PARIETAL REGION.
Anamnesis
The patient a Yemeni citizen came to the clinic
01-June-2003 complaining of headache for the
last 6 months with blurred vision and his
condition is deteriorating.
On examination: The patient is fully conscious,
with no meningeal signs and have right side
paresis.
The patient was sent for investigations and a
very huge Hydatid cyst left occipito-parietal
region was seen.
Wide osteoplastic craniotomy
over the left occipito-parietal region with the
dura was opened X-shaped and reflected to sides.
Incision over the most vertical projection to
the cyst and transcortical approach was
achieved. Considering that the hydatid cyst can
cause dissemination and chemical irritation to
the brain all precautions were undertaken to
avoid spilling of the content. The cavity of the
cyst was evacuated and washed with Savlon. After
shrinkage of the cyst, it was totally removed
and meticulous irrigation of the cavity was
achieved. . Routine closure of the
wounds.
Smooth postoperative recovery.
He was sent to the ward. He showed dramatic
improvement .
FOLLOW UP
He came 18-June-2004 with
clean wounds talking walking and no headache
and no paresis..
Comments
Hydatid cyst in the brain is a rare condition
and it mostly can be seen in Yemen. Hydatid cyst
is more common and the general surgeon and
thoracic surgeon can see it more frequently even
in Jordan.
