01-JULY-2002 BANDAR HMOUD AL-NAYEF 28 YEARS
REMOVAL OF SLIPPED HARRINGTON RODS.
Anamnesis
The patient after RTA 07-May-2001 got fracture
dislocation L1 for what he was operated by me
10-May-2001 using Harrington rods with
sublaminar wires. He was doing well until he
felt that the rods are broken. X-ray performed
recently showing dislodgment of the upper hooks
out of the construct.
On examination: The patient is neurologically
free except for unpleasant sensation of the
movement of the construct.
The old wound refreshed and the rods with hooks
and sublaminar wires were removed.
Routine closure of the wound.
Smooth postoperative recovery.
He was sent to the ward.
Follow Up
The patient came to the clinic 11-July -2002
with clean wound.
The patient then came to the clinic 20-January-2007
complaining of LBP and left knee pain. He was
sent for investigations and MRI lumbar showing
the old wedged fracture of L1 and MRI of the
left knee showed torn lateral
meniscus left knee. He was sent to orthopedic
surgeon.
Comments
The Harrington rods are presumed to be
temporary installed until the healing of the bones. After
8-12 months it is advisable to be removed even without
breaking or dislodgment.
