YEARS EXTRUDED DISC L5-S1 WITH SEVERE COMPRESSION OF THE RIGHT
S1 ROOT.
Anamnesis
The
patient was transferred from other hospital with
agonizing right sciatica for 4 months. She was
unable to stand or walk and she was evaluated in
the operating room.
The
patient performed MRI lumbar spine 13-March-2011
showing extruded disc L5-S1 with severe
compression of the right S1 root.
On
examination: the patient had severe weak dorsi
and planterflexion right foot with shooting pain
down to the heel.
Foraminotomy of the right S1 root was performed.
The extruded disc of L5-S1 was removed lateral
to the axilla, after what the root became lax.
The disc space of L5-S1 was cleaned from the
right side.
Routine
closure of the wound. Smooth postoperative
recovery with improvement of the power of the
right foot and disappearance of sciatica.

Comments
The estimated recurrence rate in this case is
ranking around 7%, because the disc space of
L5-S1 still not shallow.
