REMOVAL OF SUBLAMINAR FIXATION DEVICE INSERTED FOR FRACTURE D11.
Anamnesis
The patient
was operated by me
04-June-2009
for burst unstable fracture D11 with sublaminar
fixation with rods.
The
patient then came 23-February-2011 asking to
remove the construct, which was in place.
On
examination: the patient was not complaining and
he was neurologically free. Considering that the
Harrington rods are intended to be used
temporarily, he was willing to remove them.
The old incision was refreshed and the hooks and
the rods also. Some of the screws were difficult
to remove, they were drilled off. The rods were
removed and all the hooks also.
Routine
closure of the wound. Smooth postoperative
recovery.

Comments
Sublaminar fixation with rods are still in use and
their ease of use, still keeping them in practice. They are
intended to be inserted temporarily, and they can be removed
easily without causing to the patient any harm.
Usually the above mentioned data are
applied to Harrington rods, but the other hooks with locking
screws are more difficult to remove.
Notice: Not all operative activities
can be recorded due to lack of time.
Notice: Head injuries and very urgent surgeries are also
escaped from the plan .
