Comments
Despite the fact that during the first
surgery, the mass was totally resected, but he must have
neurofibromatosis with other schwannomas hiding beside
unseen.
Anamnesis
The patient was operated by me 29-July-1997 for
schwannoma of the left sciatic nerve. The
patient came 23-June-2002 telling that the mass
start to be felt within the last 4 months.
On examination: The patient is neurologically
free except for the mass felt in the lower third
of the left leg above the popliteal fossa.
He was sent for MRI investigation and done
25-June-2002 showing the huge recurrence of the
schwannoma.
The old incision refreshed
and the boundaries of the multilobulated mass
identified and total resection of the mass with
sharp dissection of the mass off the left
sciatic nerve was performed. After resection of
the huge multilobulated mass inspection of the
area for other masses was negative.
Follow Up
The patient came to the clinic 11-July-2002 with
clean wound and neurologically free.
The final histologic result was benign
peripheral nerve sheath tumor consistent with
schwannoma. ( Hesham Mosleh, MD FRC Path. and
Eman Hijazi MD JPB.).
The patient then came 25-July-2007 suspecting
that there is recurrence, but upon inspection
there was nothing and he was advised to be
checked for recurrence in periodic manner.
