OF SLIPPED HARRINGTON DEVICE INSERTED FOR FRACTURE L1 06-DECEMBER-2003.
Anamnesis:
The patient was operated by
me 06-December-2003 for unstable fracture L1
by using Harrington rods.
The patient came to the
clinic several times with routine check up which
confirmed good alignment of the construct. Then
he came 26-July-2005 with new X-rays confirming
that the rods slipped off their place. The
patient was advised to undergo their removal. He
escaped 3 years, then he came with his wife
30-October-2008 and he was advised to remove the
rods.
The sublaminar wire were
removed and the rods were removed first from the
lower flail part . Routine closure of the wound.
Smooth postoperative
recovery.
Comments
The patient had unstable
fracture and Harrington rods were applied.
Insertion of such constructs is usually
temporary and it is advisable to remove them
after 1 year, even if they are in place, to make
the patient able to bind his back.
The Harrington rods are done,
that if they slip, they slip outward and they do
not cause serious complications to the neural
tissues.
The use of Harrington rods
still an acceptable option for reduction and
fusion, despite the emergence of new
technologies.
