FRACTURE HARRINGTON RODS.
Anamnesis
The patient son came to the clinic 24-February-2013
claiming that his mother got midback pain the
last month after lifting heavy object and felt a
sound as a crack in the back. The patient was operated by me 1996
for fracture L1 and Harrington distraction rods
were inserted at that time.
X-ray lumbar spine done 19-February-2013 showing
fracture of both rods at the junction with
ratchet part both rods.
On examination the patient had drop right foot
with weak planterflexion, which was since the
accident 17 years ago.
Through 2 small separate
incisions, the rods and hooks were removed.
Routine closure of the wounds.
Smooth postoperative recovery.
Comments
The patient had unstable fracture of L1 17
years ago. The construct was intended to be
removed after 1 year and the patient escaped.
